“Mommy, Daddy, look, a treasure chest! I wanna go there!” On October 1st, 2022, BASIS students gathered at the Lower Campus for the Lower School Carnival, where students engaged in various indoor and outdoor activities. Volunteers from the Upper School were there to assist with the activities and help the teachers.
The carnival included 7 games: Ring Any Bottle, Treasure Chest, Loop De Doo, Shockwave, Cross Bow, Roller Bowler, Milk Can, and Cover the Spot. For each of these games, winners could pick a prize from a collection of toys. The goal of the Ring Any Game is for the player’s thrown ring to land on the top of one of the bottles. Students that participated in Treasure Chest received a set of keys and checked if their keys fit in the lock. During a game of Loop De Doo, the player rolls three balls down the gaming unit so that they loop up to the top board. Winners had to roll all three balls into the same color area.
In the game Shockwave, the student had to guide a loop over a rod without touching the rod; if they did, the rod would ring and they would lose. Crossbow, perhaps the most interesting out of all the games, required the player to wield a crossbow while aiming a dart at a target. The objective of the game Roller Bowler was to have the participant roll one ball at a time into the valley-like region. During Milk Can, players were given 3 balls to throw into cans. In Cover the Spot, participants attempted to cover a red spot by scattering silver discs over it.
In the cafeteria, a concession stand served a variety of snacks and beverages. At the entrance of the school, two food trucks were set up: one for waffles and the other for shaved ice. Right next to that, a dunk tank was set up, where students could throw a ball to dunk teachers in water.
Outside on the lawn, a variety of activities were set up. The most popular was the arts and crafts section hosted by Ms. Quihuiz, the art teacher at the Upper School. Here, students could color and draw. Nearby, there was also a face painting stand and a temporary tattoo booth.
To spread the word about earthquake safety and awareness, the American Red Cross Club set up poster boards and coloring activities. One of the coloring activities, for instance, detailed what to do in the event of an earthquake.
In addition to the games and booths, there was also room in the cafeteria for students and parents to sit and chat with their friends. Some children were also playing Jenga or Cornhole, while others were just having fun on the play structure as their parents supervised them.
Overall, the carnival's many activities proved to be exciting and successful. Volunteers helped the event run smoothly, kindly guided students to all of the booths, and also helped them with games. The Lower School Carnival was an opportunity for the whole BASIS community to connect in a fun and energetic way.
